often seem to lose a little of their luster as we
accumulate more of them. The presents are fewer,
less thrilling. The party guests — if, indeed,
anyone remembers to throw us a party —are more
blasé, and no longer spill Grape-Ade all over their
laps in hyperactive frenzy, or throw full-blown
sugar fits and fall face-first into the cake. Fear
not — Spring Green, Wisconsin, wants to return your
birthdays to their former state of fun, excitement
and excess. So serious are they about this vital
mission that they have proclaimed themselves,
"Wisconsin's Birthday Town."
What happens? On your birthday, you go to Spring
Green, and they give you lots and lots of presents.
It's that simple, says Maya Madden, proprietor of No
Rules Jewelry." You can spend the whole day
strolling around town collecting your birthday loot.
There are 21 participating merchants so far, and the
program just keeps growing.
A few simple guidelines unlock this cornucopia of
birthday treasures, notes Madden. "The Birthday Town
logo is a yellow birthday card sticker you'll find
on each participant's door. Stop at the first one
you see and show them your photo ID to verify that
it's your birthday. You'll receive a birthday card,
a green registration sticker, and your first gift.
And then you're set to collect your free or
discounted merchandise and services all over town."
Birthday presents are supposed to be surprises. But
a few of the gifts you can anticipate receiving in
Birthday Town include a free lunch entrée at the
Spring Green General Store, a free bar of special
luxury soap from Panacea, and a free pair of
earrings with the purchase of a pair at No Rules
Jewelry. Headquarters Styling Salon offers you 50%
off on a personal product, and the House on the Rock
will treat you to a free tour of the attraction.
Madden encourages "everyone with a birthday" to
visit Wisconsin's Birthday Town on their next natal
day for a daylong party full of celebration and
surprises. "And bring all your friends," she
advises, "to help you carry home the booty."
